A trivet and a coaster do the same quiet job at two scales: they stand between the table and the things that would mark it, the hot dish, the cold glass, while looking like they were meant to be seen. At their best they read less as protection and more as the last decorative layer of a set table.

The gold trivets are the centrepiece. Cast in metal with a metallic gold finish and built as sculptural objects, the Art-Deco symmetry of the Gatsby, the circular motif of the Prosperity, they sit under a serving dish, a vase or a cluster of candles and hold the light like jewellery for the table. At 20 cm across they anchor the centre rather than disappear under it, and they are among the most-gifted pieces we make.

Alongside the metal sit the quilted coasters, the soft, stitched coaster most people know us for, made to take a cup or glass without the hardness of stone or steel. The gold anchors the centre, the coasters carry the same finish out to each setting. Work them in with the placemats and runners and the napkins and napkin rings, or begin from the dining range and build outward. Exclusive to The Pillow Company, across India.

What is the difference between a trivet and a coaster?

Size and what they hold. A trivet is the larger piece at the centre of the table under a hot serving dish, a vase or candles. A coaster is the small one at each setting that takes a cup or glass. Both protect the surface; bought to match, they make a table look deliberately set.

What are your gold trivets made of, and what size are they?

The gold trivets, the Gatsby and the Prosperity among them, are cast in metal with a metallic gold finish and measure 20 cm across. Sculptural enough to stand alone as a centrepiece and sturdy enough to take a hot dish. Keep the gold away from abrasives, it is a finish, not a coating to scrub.

Do the trivets and coasters come as a set?

They are made to work together rather than sold as one fixed box. The gold trivet anchors the centre and the coasters carry the same finish to each place, so you build the look across the table. Many pieces also pair with the matching placemats and runners and napkins.

What is a quilted coaster?

The soft, stitched coaster we are known for, a padded fabric coaster that takes a cup or glass gently, without the cold hardness of stone or metal. Sometimes searched as a pillow coaster or tea coaster; it is the same piece, and it sits naturally with our quilted cushions and bedspreads.

How do I style trivets on the table?

Set one or two gold trivets down the centre, under a serving dish, a vase or a group of candles, and let them carry the eye along the table. On a longer table, two or three spaced along a runner keep hot dishes within reach of every seat. Keep the coasters to the settings so the centre stays clear.

How do I care for them?

The gold trivets are wiped clean with a soft, dry cloth, kept away from abrasive scourers and harsh cleaners, which dull the finish. The quilted coasters are best spot-cleaned gently and kept dry. Neither belongs in a dishwasher.

What if I need to exchange something?

If a piece isn’t right, we run an exchange policy rather than refunds. See our Exchange & Refund Policy.
