Good shoes are worth keeping exactly as they were bought. A shaper keeps the toe full and the front free of creases, a tall boot stands straight from ankle to top, and all of it happens quietly on the shelf.
Shoe Care is the small habit that keeps them: a shaper inside to hold the form while they rest, a bag around them to keep the dust off without sealing the leather in.
The shapers are quilted velvet over soft filling, or a plain linen blend in ecru, each with a sealed silica sachet to draw down cupboard damp. The bags are sheer organza, so you find the pair you want without opening anything and the leather still breathes. Where most shoe storage is drawstring nylon, these suit the shoes worth caring for. What is in Shoe Care?
Shoe shapers and boot shapers in eight forms, shoe bags and boot bags in eight, and care sets that pair the two. A stored pair usually wants a shaper inside and a bag around it.
What is a shoe shaper, and how is it different from a shoe tree?
A shoe tree is rigid, usually cedar or plastic, and works by tension: it presses outward against the upper. A shaper is soft-filled and works by occupying the space, holding the shoe open without pushing against it. Both stop the crease setting. A tree also stretches the shoe, which is not always what you want on soft or unlined leather.
What are they made of?
The shapers are quilted velvet in black, or a plain linen blend in ecru, over soft filling. The bags are sheer organza with a plain velvet or linen blend trim. A bag wants to be light and breathable, which is the opposite of what a shaper wants to be. Quilting is on the velvet shapers only.
Why is a shoe bag sheer rather than opaque?
So you can identify a pair without opening the bag, and so the weave lets air through rather than sealing damp against the leather. Each shoe bag also carries a partition down the middle, so left and right never rub.
What is the silica sachet for?
A closed cupboard collects damp, and damp is what stored leather least wants. Each shaper carries a sealed sachet inside to draw it down. It is sealed, so nothing touches the shoe.
How do I care for these pieces?
Dry clean only. Steam gently on low heat to release creases, and keep everything out of direct sun.
